Defibrillator now available at RCC – training scheduled

Someone collapses at Mass or while mowing the grass. It happens without warning. It can affect anyone - healthy adults, even teenagers. It cannot be prevented. There's no vaccine. Most don't survive. It's called Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) and there's only one way to treat it. Defibrillation. Unfortunately, 90 - 95 % of the victims die because they didn't have quick access to this easy-to-administer life-saving treatment.

Resurrection has purchased an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) after a recommendation from the Crafty Ladies and the Health Cabinet. It was funded by profits from the Crafty Ladies. The machine is used to treat victims who experience sudden cardiac arrest. The AED will analyze the heart rhythm and advise the operator if a shockable rhythm is detected. It will advise the operator to push a button and deliver a shock ONLY if the machine detects a shockable rhythm. There is NO decision-making by the operator. It is very simple; almost child-friendly. It is designed to be used by the average, nonmedical person. It will not allow a shock if the victim does not need it. You cannot hurt the victim.

The real "hurt" would come if the machine is available and it is not used due to fear.

The American Heart Associa-tion has recommended the wide-spread use of these machines, particularly in rural areas where 911 response time may be long. The AED is also a good idea because of the advanced age of the SML population. It is not uncommon to see AEDs in grocery stores, shopping malls, airports and churches.

It is important that we become familiar with the device's operation and location. Don't be afraid! Come and learn!

The device will be demon-strated on Thursday, May 13 after Mass and also on Sunday, June 6 at 9:15 a.m. at Trinity Ecumenical Parish.

You will be amazed at how “smart” it is and how easy it is to use.
